Part A - Explore the arts as a participant

What I have to do
  • Describe the arts activity that I will focus on - Filmmaking
  • Information on how I developed my participation - Inspiration Spielberg, Home movies, Go to a club, check other clubs in the area, read articles, free internet courses, books in library, other filmmakers, storyboards, learning techniques,
  • Summery of what I've learnt and how - film myself talking about what I've learnt.
Part B -

Part C - Art Heros and Heroins

  • Evidence of my art hero - film myself talking about my hero
  • Do a summery in a form of media (eg. scrap book, video, painting etc....)

Art Hero - Steven Spielberg

Steven Allan Spielberg is an American film director, screenwriter, film producer, video game designer and studio executive. He has had a career spanning 40 years and he has covered many different themes and subjects including science-fiction, adventure, slavery, war and terrorism.

I have watched many of his films including Saving Private Ryan, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park and many more.

He first started film making in his early teens with his friends. In 1958, he became a Boy Scout, was fully awarded the photography merit badge by making a 9 minute film titled The Last Gunfight. This is how he started to get into it. At 13, he won a prize for a 40 minute war film titled Escape to Nowhere which was based on a battle in Africa.

In 1963, aged 16 Spielberg wrote and directed his first independant film.

He has many film projects going on at the moment. He is turning the Tintn Adventures by Belgian author Herge. He is also working on a film of the World War 1 book War Horse by Michael Morpurgo. Both are to be released in December this year.

ACTION PLAN

10th January 2011
I need to finish off my arts hero and research film making.

Proffessional filmmaking is done in three stages:
  • Development - The script is written and drafted into a workable blueprint for a film.
  • Pre-production - Preperations are made for the shoot, in which cast and crew are hired, locations are selected and sets are built.
  • Production - The raw elements for the finished film are recorded.
  • Post-Production - The film is edited; production sound (dialogue), music tracks (and songs) are composed, performed and recorded. If a film is sought to have a score; sound effects are designed and recorded; and any other computer-graphic 'visual' effects are digitally added, all sound elements are mixed into "stems" then the stems are mixed then married to picture and the film is fully completed.
  • Sales and distribution - The film is screened for potential buyers (distributors), is picked up by a distributor and reaches its cinema and/or home media audience.
There are different genres of film:
  • Action
  • Adventure
  • Comedy
  • Drama
  • Fantasy
  • Horror
  • Mystery
  • Romance
  • Thriller

11th January 2011
I'm quite interested in the camera work and the techniques used. If I find out about the different cameras used to make a film and the techniques then that will help me with my final project.

A Frenchman called Louis Lumiere was credited for inventing the first motion picture camera in 1895. But other people had made similar inventions around the same time as him. However Lumieres camera was a portable. It was a film processing unit and projector called the Cinematographe. This was the first camera to have those three functions.

The first comercial  film produced was the Oberammergau Passion Play in 1898. After that, many more films followed.

What I'm going to do....

For the Arts Award I'm going to do a film about something. My arts hero is going to be Steven Spielberg.

I'm really interested in the Movie Industry and hope in the future to become part of it and make big films.

I need to make an action plan before I start. An action plan is a way of achieving a task or project. So I will need to research film making, how films are made and good little tips of filming to be able to achieve this project.

I can interview people who are in the business already so I can learn about how to make a film, how to become a better film maker and any good tips of how to film.

At the end of the arts award, I will have needed to produce something from the skills and tips I would have gained from the research.
